PSYCHICS

In 2003, when I was just starting to photograph small, free-standing businesses, I photographed a small, free-standing structure with a sign up top that read, "Know Your Future." Years later, when I was making pictures of megachurches, I began thinking again about that small building, connecting the idea of the large church with the small spiritual guide. The storefront psychic is as conventional a sight in America as is a church. They are both everywhere, guiding people's spirituality. Contact with the supernatural can happen anywhere, in a church or a tiny shed.
Start looking for these buildings and they are suddenly everywhere. I photographed most of them between daybreak and dawn or sunset and dusk, those hours that are neither quite day nor night. At several of these places I sought consultation, but no one ever answered the door.
These photographs appeared in American Megazine #2.
